The objective lens of a typical upright microscope is made of plastic, glass or crystal. Because of the magnification provided by the objective lens, this portion of the microscope can be highly decorative. Some designs include a bell-shaped bell-style housing, a bell-style cup housing, and even a mini globe.

The specimen can be viewed at different angles and viewing angle settings. Typically the specimen is held in place using a boom stand. Some have high optical quality for single side observation. The image can then be projected onto a small illuminated plate using either a digital camera or a computer monitor. The mechanical structure of most models includes a powerful motor that provides both the strong transmission of light through the specimen and the quiet operation of the microscope. Most have a power drive unit and an adjustable power source. Sensors and accessory units are also available. Some models may include a light source. In some instances, an eyepiece may be incorporated into the motor assembly. Usually a combination of optical lens, objective holder and eyepiece carrier is used for this purpose.
